Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil as a Mouthwash

Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil comes in the form of a solid. If you’ve never seen the oil it sounds as if it would be the consistency of olive oil, but it is not. It is more like a butter and melts much the same way only quicker and at a lower temperature.

Coconut oil is packed full of nutrients great for teeth (nutrients listed below). With these natural nutrients, using coconut oil as a mouthwash only makes since. Why? When used as a mouthwash, the natural enzymes in the oil works with your saliva to draw out toxins in the mouth and blood.

How do you use the coconut oil as a mouthwash? There are two ways to do it, both are correct. The difference lies in the preference of the user. Some people have a hard time putting the solid into their mouth because they don’t like the way it feels while others have no problem at all. The good news is that you have two options: use solid coconut oil or melt it before using it as a mouthwash.

As long as you slowly melt the oil and do not over heat, you will get the same wonderful results. If you choose to melt the oil first, be sure to let it cool so it will not burn your mouth.

How to Use Coconut Oil as a Mouthwash

The ancient Ayurvedic method of oil pulling is easy and inexpensive and has been used in natural medicines for decades. To get the best benefits of the extra virgin coconut oil , you should start your day with the following routine. Do not eat or drink anything of a morning before you mouthwash. Why?

In the morning, our mouths are full of bacteria and toxins – more so than any other time of the day as they build up and grow while we sleep. By using the mouthwash first thing in the morning, you will be able to get rid of more toxins that threaten the insides of our mouths and our bodies.

What to do…

Place one tablespoon, either solid or melted (the solid will quickly melt inside your mouth if you choose to not melt the oil first), into your mouth and begin to pull the oil through your teeth. Swish back and forth being sure to pull the oil through all of your teeth and across your tongue. For best results, swish between 15 to 20 minutes. While this seems like a long time, it is necessary for the oil to do its job to the fullest. Some people choose to swish the oil while taking a shower in the morning. Kind of like the old saying…’killing two birds with one stone’.

Even though coconut oil  is safe to eat and drink, do NOT swallow the oil after you’ve used it as a mouthwash. It is full of bacteria and toxins and it needs to be spit out. After spitting out the used oil, brush your teeth and rinse several times to remove any remaining bacteria left inside your mouth.

While this is not a major problem, it will spill easily and is hard to work with.
